Snorkelling from the boat

Valencia's best seabeds can't be seen from the beach

Snorkelling in Valencia from the shore is tricky: the city beaches are sandy and visibility near the coast is poor. From a catamaran it's a different story. We sail a few miles to the stretches of coast with the best visibility, anchor a few metres from sand, seagrass and rocky bottoms, and you jump straight into the water from the stern platform.

All our trips include at least one stop for swimming and snorkelling, and on the 4 and 6 hour trips we make two. The gear (mask, snorkel and fins in several sizes) is included, as are flotation vests for anyone who wants to float effortlessly, the paddleboard and the inflatables for those who prefer to stay on the surface.

No experience needed. The crew shows you how to use the gear, picks the anchoring spot according to the day's sea and keeps a constant eye from the boat. It's a perfect plan for families with children who can swim, couples and groups of friends who want to see the Mediterranean from below.

Where we snorkel

Snorkelling spots on the Valencia coast

Pinedo beach

South of the port, calm water and a sandy bottom with patches of seagrass. The usual stop on the 3 and 4 hour trips.

El Saler and the Devesa

Off the Albufera Natural Park, Valencia's wildest coastline. Very clear water and seabeds where you'll spot bream, sargo and salema.

Malvarrosa and Patacona

Anchored away from the beach, beyond the urban stretch: shoals of small fish with the city as a backdrop.

Port Saplaya

To the north, next to Valencia's “little Venice”. Breakwaters full of marine life and a quiet anchorage.

The skipper chooses the anchoring spot each day based on wind, visibility and trip length.

What you'll see

Marine life in the Valencian Mediterranean

Posidonia meadows

The seagrass that oxygenates the Mediterranean and shelters most of the fish you'll see.

Coastal fish

Sargo, gilt-head bream, salema, saddled bream and damselfish are common; with luck, an octopus hiding among the rocks.

Sand and rock bottoms

White sandbanks alternating with breakwaters and natural rock, ideal for beginners thanks to the shallow depth.

Transparent water

Between June and October visibility is around 8 to 15 metres on calm days.

FAQ

Your questions, answered

Where can you snorkel in Valencia?
The best spots are away from the city beaches: Pinedo, El Saler, the Albufera coast and the breakwaters of Port Saplaya. You get there by boat; with the Sol de Mayo we leave from the Marina Real and anchor wherever visibility is best that day.
Is the snorkelling gear included?
Yes. Mask, snorkel and fins in several sizes, plus flotation vests, are included in the price of every trip.
Can children snorkel?
Yes, as long as they can swim and are accompanied by an adult. We have children's masks and vests, and the stop is made in shallow water with no current.
When is the best time to snorkel in Valencia?
June to October: the water is between 22 and 27 degrees and visibility is best. September and October usually have the clearest sea and fewer people.
How much does the snorkelling trip cost?
Snorkelling is included in every Sol de Mayo trip. The private catamaran costs from €750 for up to 10 people (3 hours), that is, from €75 per person with the whole boat.
